Publisher: Schlumberger | ISBN: 0978853008 | PDF | 487 pages | 39,2 mb

Cementing is arguably the most important operation performed on a well. Well cementing technology is an amalgam of many interdependent scientific and engineering disciplines which are essential to achieve the primary goal of well cementing - zonal isolation. This textbook is a comprehensive and up-to-date reference concerning the application of these disciplines to cementing a well. ``Well Cementing'' is envisioned as an upper-level university book, as well as a reference for practicing engineers and scientists. The first section of the book illustrates how the quality of the hydraulic seal provided by the cement sheath can affect well performance. The second section concentrates on the design phase of a cementing treatment, and various aspects of cement job execution are covered in the third section. The fourth section addresses cement job evaluation. The text is supported by many tables and figures, an extensive bibliography and an index. There are also chapters devoted to subjects which are currently of particular interest to the industry, including the prevention of annular gas migration, foamed cements, and cementing horizontal wellbores.

Transportation Systems Planning: Methods and Applications

Transportation Systems Planning: Methods and Applications
Konstadinos G. Goulias | 2002-12-13 00:00:00 | CRC; 1 edition | 428 | Civil Engineering
Transportation engineering and transportation planning are two sides of the same coin aiming at the design of an efficient infrastructure and service to meet the growing needs for accessibility and mobility. Many well-designed transport systems that meet these needs are based on a solid understanding of human behavior. Since transportation systems are the backbone connecting the vital parts of a city, in-depth understanding of human nature is essential to the planning, design, and operational analysis of transportation systems. With contributions by transportation experts from around the world, Transportation Systems Planning: Methods and Applications compiles engineering data and methods for solving problems in the planning, design, construction, and operation of various transportation modes into one source. It is the first methodological transportation planning reference that illustrates analytical simulation methods that depict human behavior in a realistic way, and many of its chapters emphasize newly developed and previously unpublished simulation methods. The handbook demonstrates how urban and regional planning, geography, demography, economics, sociology, ecology, psychology, business, operations management, and engineering come together to help us plan for better futures that are human-centered.The text reviews projects from an initial problem statement to final policy action and associated decision-making and examines policies at all levels of government, from the city to the national levels. Unlike many other handbooks which are encyclopedic reviews, Transportation Systems Planning extends far beyond modeling in engineering and economics to present a truly transdisciplinary approach to transportation systems planning.

Steel Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist

Steel Metallurgy for the Non-Metallurgist
J. D. Verhoeven | 2007-01-01 00:00:00 | ASM International | 225 | Civil Engineering
This book explains the metallurgy of steel and its heat treatment for non-metallurgists. It starts from simple concepts_beginning at the level of high-school chemisty classes_and building to more complex concepts involved in heat treatment of most all types of steel as well as cast iron. This book is THE practicle primer on steel metallurgy for those who heat, forge, or machine steel.

Summary: A must for knifemakers
Rating: 5

Consider this the Cliff Notes of steel metalurgy. It is an invaluable resource for those of us who make knives and other cutting tools. Forging and grinding a great looking knife with good geometry isn't even half of the story; manipulating the crystalin structure of the steel with heat is at least 75% of it. Steel sellection counts somewhat less. This book gives a good "in depth overview" of what steel and other ferrous alloys are, what their properties are, and how those properties can be used and manipulated. It gives an understanding of what is happening to the steel, not just a cookbook intruction of starting at point A and proceeding to the finished product. It gives knowledge of what to do when the cookbook fails and how to modify the instructions to make things come out better. It allows technique to evolve into art.
