Douglas DC-6 and DC-7 - Airliner Tech Vol. 4

Douglas DC-6 and DC-7 - Airliner Tech Vol. 4
Harry Gann | 1999-09-03 00:00:00 | Specialty Press | 100 | Aviation
One of the more knowledgeable authorities on Douglas commercial aircraft, Gann provides an enthusiast-level technical look at the design, evolution, and growth of the famous DC 6/7 series of aircraft. Includes engineering drawings, production line photos, performance figures, powerplant details, and close ups of aircraft structures.

Very well done. Great photo selection and reproduction. Clear consise text. Excellent coverage from inception to later life. This would be a 5 star if printed on coated paper and if it had some color.

Presented in a single volume are the histories and technical specifications of the DC-6 and DC-7. Starting with an overview of earlier Douglas transports, Mr. Gann describes the design and the various DC-6 variants, including air freighters and military transports (C-118). The author then covers the various versions of the DC-7. Finally, Mr. Gann describes unusual uses of these aircraft (e.g., fire-fighting and pylon racing) and covers the accidents the types experienced. There is also a short chapter on the influences brought about by Douglas's competition with Lockheed (with its Constellation series). A detailed reference section covers production and delivery data, selling prices, records, and construction diagrams.

The section on the DC-6 includes a shot of flight deck and several interior pictures, but these are lacking in the chapter on the DC-7. In this respect, this book is less detailed than the volume on the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser in the same series.

Harry Gann, a noted aviation authority, presents a highly readable and enjoyable text. If, like me, you like classic propliners, this book is bound to please.
Reviews
Harry Gann, who recently died, left the aviation community with a solid body of work. This book, in typical Gann fashion, punches through the veneer of the Tech series of books.

On the surface, the series as a whole, promises much. In reality, they are at best inconsistant in presentation and information.

In this book, Gann's genius is visible beneath the framework.

Of the 8 books of this series which I own, this is the most comprehensive and direct presentation of the subject aircraft. Unlike others of the series, this book focuses on the topic at hand. The diversions into the minutia and one-offs are focussed and appropriate. If you want to know the history of the DC6 and DC7, you can't find a better starting point than this book.

The point of this particular volumn is that it is hard to hold a good writer down. The documentation of aviation history suffered a great loss with Gann's passing.

Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials

Expanding the Vision of Sensor Materials
Committee on New Sensor Technologies: Materials and Applications,Commission on Engineering and Technical Systems,National Research Council | 1995-06-22 00:00:00 | National Academies Press | 146 | Aviation
Advances in materials science and engineering have paved the way for the development of new and more capable sensors. Drawing upon case studies from manufacturing and structural monitoring and involving chemical and long wave-length infrared sensors, this book suggests an approach that frames the relevant technical issues in such a way as to expedite the consideration of new and novel sensor materials. It enables a multidisciplinary approach for identifying opportunities and making realistic assessments of technical risk and could be used to guide relevant research and development in sensor technologies.

Russia's Ekranoplans: The Caspian Sea Monster and other WIGE Craft - Red Star Vol. 8

Russia's Ekranoplans: The Caspian Sea Monster and other WIGE Craft - Red Star Vol. 8
Sergey Kommissarov | 2003-02-15 00:00:00 | Midland Publishing Ltd. | 128 | Aviation
For decades the Soviet Union and now Russia have held leading positions in the development of a special class of vehicles that are neither aircraft nor ships... or both at once. Known as wing-in-ground effect (WIGE) craft or by their Russian name of ekranoplan, these vehicles combined the best of both worlds, operating on the borderline between the sky and the sea, offering the speed of an aircraft coupled with better operating economics and the ability to operate pretty much anywhere on the world's waterways. As such they promptly attracted the attention of the military and thus have been veiled in secrecy until recently.

The book describes in detail the many series of WIGE vehicles developed by various design bureaus, including the Orlyonok, the only ekranoplan to see squadron service, the missile-armed Loon and the famous and awesome KM, or Caspian Sea Monster, which first attracted the attention of the West to these developments.

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! Color pictures, info, info, info! 16 pages of 3 view drawings of all kinds of real and imagined craft...stunning. Red Star is a fantastic series and this one will not disappoint! Highly recommended! No color profiles but it just doesn't matter with all the pictures both B&W and Color. Fantastic.

This is THE DEFINITIVE book on the ekranoplan, period. This should be on any WIG enthusiasts bookshelf. The volume of information is astonishing and there are photographs and line drawings contained in the volume not available anywhere else. After reading this book the reader gets the impression they could almost go out and design one themselves. For those who have never heard of ekranoplans or are only mildly aware of what they are will be treated to a eye opening experience. I cant recommend this book enough.

(Note to model builders, static or R/C: There are a LOT of photos AND scale line 3-view drawings in the book. This is very useful)
Reviews
For anyone interested in wing-in-ground-effect, this is a great and useful study of the Russian programs. Good base document.
