Phase-lock basics  | This is the second edition of a book about the basics of phase-locked loops (PLLs). Basics tend to be unchanging, but we can learn more about them and their manner of presentation can be improved and tuned to current practice. Loop filters driven by current sources are now so common that I have given them a more prominent place, allowing them to lead into the study of filters that use op-amps, rather than the reverse. The discussion of various applications, at the end of Part 1, which is designed to show how the basics can be applied to a wide variety of circuits, as well as to broaden the overview, has been expanded to include the now common use of PLLs for timing adjustment in ICs. This discussion includes the delay-locked loop, which is not a PLL but whose common forms can still be analyzed with the basic techniques that are used for PLLs. Frequency synthesis is another important application to which the basics can be applied, and I have broadened that description by adding material on modern fractional-N and sigma–delta techniques.

Today’s wireless communications and information systems are heavily based on microwave technology, as are an increasing number of other industry sectors. The mobile phone is a typical example of a device which makes use of wireless technologies, often capable of also functioning as an Internet browser, GPS and/or TV. In order to cope with multiple communication channels and increasing bandwidth, whilst remaining user-friendly and cost-effective, both the mobile handsets and the associated systems must be agile (adaptable/reconfigurable).

The complex needs of society have inspired considerable interest in the field of cognitive and software defined radios and triggered extensive research in adequate components and technology platforms. To meet the stringent requirements to these systems, especially in agility and cost, new components with enhanced performances and new functionalities are needed. In this area, ferroelectrics have great potential and are already gaining ground.

Ferroelectrics are a class of materials characterized by spontaneous electric polarization. Components based on these materials have a broad range of commercial applications. The piezoelectric properties of the materials are exploited in sensors and actuators. When the electric dipoles are aligned (ferroelectric phase), the materials are widely used in memory cells. When the electric dipoles are not aligned (paraelectric phase), the materials have even greater potential for microwave applications. Many ferroelectrics, especially perovskites, exhibit good dielectric properties (low microwave loss and leakage currents), including an extremely high dielectric permittivity. As this permittivity is dependent on the applied electric field, mechanical stress and temperature, suchmaterials are suitable for the development of tuneable microwave devices for applications in agile microwave systems.

This is one of the best presentations of digital electronics in the CPLD Altera MAX Plus II design enviroment and VHDL I have ever seen. I do not know of another digital book like it.

We used this book for an intro course on computer engineering.
The book, despite being the 1st edition, is very clear and concise, and I turned to it a number of times when the lectures weren't as clear and specific as they might be. Duecks book delves into a bit more detail with more examples {on things like flipflops, latches etc} than other similar books on the market. It also relates the material learned to actual computers looking at the structure of RAM in home PC's.
