Aspect-Oriented Software Development with Use Cases

Aspect-Oriented Software Development with Use Cases (The Addison-Wesley Object Technology Series) by Ivar Jacobson, Pan-Wei Ng
Publisher: Addison-Wesley Professional (December 30, 2004) | ISBN-10: 0321268881 | CHM | 6,1 Mb | 496 pages

Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a revolutionary new way to think about software engineering. AOP was introduced to address crosscutting concerns such as security, logging, persistence, debugging, tracing, distribution, performance monitoring, and exception handling in a more effective manner. Unlike conventional development techniques, which scatter the implementation of each concern into multiple classes, aspect-oriented programming localizes them.

Aspect-oriented software development (AOSD) uses this approach to create a better modularity for functional and nonfunctional requirements, platform specifics, and more, allowing you to build more understandable systems that are easier to configure and extend to meet the evolving needs of stakeholders.

In this highly anticipated new book, Ivar Jacobson and Pan-Wei Ng demonstrate how to apply use cases—a mature and systematic approach to focusing on stakeholder concerns—and aspect-orientation in building robust and extensible systems. Throughout the book, the authors employ a single, real-world example of a hotel management information system to make the described theories and practices concrete and understandable.

The authors show how to identify, design, implement, test, and refactor use-case modules, as well as extend them. They also demonstrate how to design use-case modules with the Unified Modeling Language (UML)—emphasizing enhancements made in UML 2.0—and how to achieve use-case modularity using aspect technologies, notably AspectJ.

Practical UML Statecharts in C/C++, Second Edition: Event-Driven Programming for Embedded Systems

Practical UML Statecharts in C/C++ Second Edition bridges the gap between high-level abstract concepts of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and the actual programming aspects of modern hierarchical state machines (UML statecharts). The book describes a lightweight, open source, event-driven infrastructure, called QP that enables direct manual coding UML statecharts and concurrent event-driven applications in C or C++ without big tools.
This book is presented in two parts. In Part I, you get a practical description of the relevant state machine concepts starting from traditional finite state automata to modern UML state machines followed by state machine coding techniques and state-machine design patterns, all illustrated with executable examples. In Part II, you find a detailed design study of a generic real-time framework indispensable for combining concurrent, event-driven state machines into robust applications. Part II begins with a clear explanation of the key event-driven programming concepts such as inversion of control (Hollywood Principle), blocking versus non-blocking code, run-to-completion (RTC) execution semantics, the importance of event queues, dealing with time, and the role of state machines to maintain the context from one event to the next. This background is designed to help software developers in making the transition from the traditional sequential to the modern event-driven programming, which can be one of the trickiest paradigm shifts.
The lightweight QP event-driven infrastructure goes several steps beyond the traditional real-time operating system (RTOS). In the simplest configuration, QP runs on bare-metal microprocessor, microcontroller, or DSP completely replacing the RTOS. QP can also work with almost any OS/RTOS to take advantage of the existing device drivers, communication stacks, and other middleware. The accompanying website to this book contains complete open source code for QP, ports to popular processors and operating systems, including 80x86, ARM Cortex-M3, MSP430, and Linux, as well as all examples described in the book.
*Focuses on core concepts rather than tools which are always changing allowing the reader to continue to use this information with various projects
*Provides a complete, ready-to-use, open source software architecture for small and large embedded systems
*Includes an extensive example using the ARM Cortex-M3 throughout the book highlighting issues programmers and architects encounter in everyday life

Java the UML Way

One of the only books that bridge the gap between O-O design (in UML) and O-O programming (in Java) in an integrated fashion.

* Learn how to translate a UML class diagram into Java source code
* Includes extensive coverage of GUI programming with Swing
* A running case study is used throughout the book
* Includes introductory level coverage of databases and distributed systems, some knowledge of which is vital for building serious programs
* Companion Web Site includes slides, exercise solutions, sample programs and links.

Object-Oriented Design with UML and Java

* Integrates design and implementation, using Java and UML
* Includes case studies, exercises and a free software
* Bridges the gap between programming texts and high level analysis books on design defines not only the data type of a data structure, but also the types of operations/functions that can be applied to the data structure. Java is a general purpose programming language with a number of features that make the language well suited for use on the World Wide Web. Fully road tested from the authors own courses, Object-Oriented Design with UML and Java shows how considering the modeling and programming languages together from the start can be beneficial, shifting the emphasis away from detailed programming issues, and instead allowing the focus to fall on the analysis of the meaning and accuracy of the model. No prior knowledge of object orientation is assumed, though some knowledge of Java or other high level programming language is required. Language (UML) is a general-purpose programming language for specifying and visualizing complex software, especially large, object-oriented projects. Object-oriented programming is when a tool for hands on learning
