The Church in Ancient Society: From Galilee to Gregory the Great (Oxford History of the Christian Church)
Henry Chadwick | 2002-02-28 00:00:00 | Oxford University Press, USA | 746 | Church History
This book provides a full and enjoyable narrative history of the first six centuries of the Christian Church, examining how Christianity changed Ancient Greek and Roman society. Following a chronological approach, Henry Chadwick's clear exposition of important texts and theological debates in their historical context is unrivalled in detail.
Reviews
This is a very detailed study of early church history. But it also, naturally, covers other areas as well....social and military history for instance.

The only drawback to buying this book is the price. Seventy dollars for a paperback is pretty steep but if you are really into church history then it is well worth the price.
Reviews
This is a excellent work, but it only focuses on the development of doctrine and church official structure (the story of their definition is summarised with concision, interpretation being reduced to a minimum, and with themes often split between different chapters).Because of that, the book is a heavy reading.
